Know the three transit layers
Regional transit is possible, but it requires schedule-first planning. Miami-Dade Route 301 links the Florida City TransitWay with Key Largo, Tavernier, Islamorada and Marathon. The Lower Keys Shuttle continues between Marathon and Key West with stops along U.S. 1. Inside Key West and Stock Island, local on-demand service and other city routes cover a denser, more walkable area.
Treat every transfer as a hard dependency. Check the current operator schedule, direction of travel and stop location the day before and again before leaving. Stops on opposite sides of U.S. 1 may be far apart or difficult to cross. Have exact fare or the current mobile payment method ready, and arrive early.
Design the trip around walkable nodes
A car-free vacation works most smoothly when you stay near the activity you booked. Key West offers the broadest combination of lodging, food, attractions and transit. In other Keys, a waterfront resort may still be miles from groceries or a bus stop. Confirm the walking route, not just the straight-line distance, before reserving.
For a split stay, choose one Upper or Middle Keys property close to U.S. 1 and finish in Key West. Use tours with confirmed pickup only when the operator states exactly where and when it occurs. Taxis and ride-hail can fill gaps, but late-night and remote-island availability is not guaranteed.

- Ask lodging staff to identify the correct side of U.S. 1 for your direction.
Dry Tortugas is a separate transportation plan
Dry Tortugas National Park is about 70 miles west of Key West and has no road access. Visitors arrive by the authorized ferry, authorized seaplane, private boat or permitted charter. Ferry and seaplane trips depart from Key West, so stay nearby the night before and protect the check-in window.
A Dry Tortugas reservation does not solve local transportation to the terminal or airport. Plan that first-mile connection, especially for an early departure. Campers face tighter passenger and gear limits than day visitors and must coordinate transportation in advance.
