Think in regions, not just miles
The Florida Keys look compact on a map, but the Overseas Highway is a two-lane lifeline through much of the island chain. A short distance can take longer than expected when bridges, weekend traffic, road work or a crash slow U.S. 1. The simplest plan is to divide the trip into Upper, Middle and Lower Keys rather than trying to visit every island in one day.
Key Largo and Tavernier work well for reef trips and an easy first night after South Florida. Islamorada is a good food-and-fishing base. Marathon puts you close to the Seven Mile Bridge, Turtle Hospital area, Bahia Honda and practical services. Big Pine Key trades nightlife for wildlife and Lower Keys access. Key West is best treated as its own destination, especially if you plan to walk, use transit or take a Dry Tortugas trip.
- Allow at least one unplanned hour on any day with a fixed reservation.
- Use mile markers when an address is hard to spot from U.S. 1.
- Never stop in a travel lane to photograph wildlife or a sunset.
Choose fewer bases and explore outward
For a four-night trip, two bases usually feel better than four hotel changes. Spend two nights in the Upper or Middle Keys and two in Key West or the Lower Keys. A week allows three bases and room for a weather day. Water activities are especially vulnerable to wind and thunderstorms, so avoid scheduling the one thing you care about most on your final morning.
Book scarce items first: state-park campsites, Dry Tortugas transportation, holiday lodging and popular fishing charters. Fill in restaurants and roadside stops afterward. If you are driving an RV or towing a boat, confirm length, clearance and parking before paying; island properties often have much tighter access than mainland travelers expect.
Build the practical layer
Save the nearest fuel stop, pharmacy, urgent-care option and grocery store for each overnight base. Cell service can be uneven offshore and during storms, so keep reservation numbers and addresses available offline. In summer, carry more drinking water than you think you need and do not leave medication or electronics in a hot vehicle.
The directory is organized by island so you can switch from inspiration to logistics quickly. Select one Key, then filter for food, transportation, boating, camping, medical services or supplies. Open the source link on time-sensitive listings before departure; schedules and business hours change more often than geography does.
